21 God-Centered Ways to Cope with a Pain Flare

Father, this flare feels heavy, and I need Your help. Please give me strength for today, wisdom to care for my body, and peace for what I cannot control. Remind me that You are near, and that Your grace is all I need. Amen.

Practical steps for navigating pain, grief, and difficult seasons.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

When pain hits, it's easy to feel discouraged, isolated, and overwhelmed. Symptoms intensify, plans unravel, and even simple tasks can feel impossible. In those moments, we may wonder where God is or why this is happening.

Scripture doesn't promise a life free from suffering, but it does promise that God will never leave us in it. During a flare, we may not be able to control our symptoms, but we can cling to God's presence, lean on His strength, and receive His grace one moment at a time.

21 WAYS TO CARE FOR YOURSELF IN SEASONS OF PAIN

1. BRING YOUR PAIN AND GRIEF TO GOD

Don't hide your sadness, frustration, or disappointment. Pour out your heart to the Lord with honesty. He welcomes your tears and understands your pain.

Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:8)

2. ASK GOD FOR WISDOM AND MAKE A PLAN

Pray for wisdom as you navigate the days ahead. Ask God to help you identify what needs your attention and what can wait.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)

 3. HONOR YOUR LIMITS

Rest is not weakness. Your limitations are no surprise to God. Give yourself permission to slow down and care for the body He has entrusted to you.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

 4. LOOK FOR GOD'S GIFTS IN THE MOMENT

Notice small moments of God's care—a kind text, a warm blanket, a favorite song, a beautiful sunset, or a moment of peace.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights … (James 1:17)

 5. BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED

Allow others to support you. God often meets our needs through the people He places in our lives.

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)

 6. RELEASE FALSE GUILT

Pain is not God's punishment. Refuse to carry guilt for things outside your control, and rest in His grace.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus … (Romans 8:1)

 7. ADJUST YOUR EXPECTATIONS

This may not be the season to accomplish everything on your list. Trust God with what remains unfinished.

Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)

 8. SPEAK GOD'S TRUTH OVER YOURSELF

When self-critical thoughts arise, replace them with biblical truth. You are loved, valued, and held by God—even on your hardest days.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1)

 9. CHOOSE HEALTHY DISTRACTIONS

Give your mind a break from focusing solely on pain. Enjoy a book, a movie, a hobby, worship music, coloring, or an uplifting podcast

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable ... think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)

10. FOCUS ON TODAY'S GRACE

Instead of worrying about tomorrow, ask, "What is God giving me the strength to do today?"

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34)

11. USE THE RESOURCES GOD HAS PROVIDED

Reach for medications, therapies, comfort measures,  coping tools, and supports to help you manage symptoms wisely.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

12. LET "GOOD ENOUGH" BE ENOUGH

Release perfectionism. Sometimes faithfulness means doing the best you can with the strength you have.

For he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. (Psalm 103:14)

13. NOURISH YOUR BODY

Fuel your body with water, food, medication, and rest. Caring for yourself is one way to steward God's gift of life.

Get up, and eat. Your journey ahead is great, and you need plenty of nourishment. (1 Kings 19:7)

14. PAUSE AND PRAY

Even a simple prayer, such as Jesus, help me, can reconnect your heart to God's presence in the middle of a difficult moment.

Pray continually. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

15. REST WITHOUT APOLOGIZING

God designed us to need rest. You don't need to justify taking care of yourself on difficult days.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8)

16. STAY CONNECTED

Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, support group, or fellow believer who can encourage you and pray with you.

Two are better than one ... If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

17. CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES

Thank God for every small step forward. Progress in challenging seasons may look different, yet it still matters.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. (Psalm 107:1)

18. REMEMBER GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

Pain feels overwhelming, yet God has carried you through difficult days before. His faithfulness remains unchanged.

Because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning … (Lamentations 3:22-23)

19. PROTECT YOUR ENERGY

Use your limited energy wisely. Ask God to help you discern where to invest your time, attention, and strength.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

20. LEAN INTO GOD'S PRESENCE

Spend time in Scripture, prayer, worship, or quiet reflection. You may not receive all the answers, but you will experience His presence.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (James 4:8)

21. TAKE THE NEXT STEP WITH GOD

You don't have to figure out the entire journey today. Trust God for the next breath, the next prayer, and the next step.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Pain can change your plans, your energy level, and your abilities for a season, but it can never change God's love for you. He sees every struggle, understands every limitation, and remains present in every difficult moment. When you don't have the strength for tomorrow, ask Him for grace for today—one step, one prayer, and one moment at a time, He will be with you through this—and through every challenge that follows.
